Teacher’s report:
Ms Kinion started the meeting with an introduction and slide show. Ms Kinion thanked all of the parents in attendance for being supportive of their children in band. Ms Kinion covered topics of the up coming year. She asked for parent involvement at home and at school. Parents are encouraged to check instruments for cleanliness, encourage practice at home, consider private lessons, and volunteer/ attend concerts, festivals, and dinners.
Ms Kinion touched on the values she insists on in class, respect and teamwork. She also touched on her grading policy and what is graded. Graded items include written and playing tests, rehearsals and concerts, and pass offs.
Ms Kinion mentioned that the Band website will be source information for everyone. Surveys and release forms will be on the website. All students must have a signed release form to participate in any field trips.
Band uniforms include polo for all bands, and long sleeve white shirt with black dress slacks for concert and symphonic bands. Shirt orders for polo’s are avail be from Ms Kinion and if you have any shirts from last year that do not fit you are encouraged to donate them to the band.
Ms Kinion also has plans for a year end trip for students who fulfill the following: no suspensions (in or out of school), have good attitude; keep a grade of A or B in band class.
President’s report:
Linda Newsome covered the Band Parents Association. Membership for the BPA is $10 per family and includes a t-shirt. Officers of the BPA hold their office from January to January so that there is cross over from one school year to the next. The next meeting will be September 20th and all parents are welcomed.
Ms Kinion closed the meeting at 7:45pm.
Concerts will include Middle School Night (Sept. 16th), Fall Festival (Oct. 8th), and The Winter Concert (Dec. 13th).
The next Band Parents Association meeting will be September 20th, 7pm, in the band room. All band parents are invited to all meetings; these are not just for members. Also, the meetings are usually about an hour in length. See you there.

Attendance: Alice Farmer, Kathleen Kinion, Charles DeStefano, Monique Doherty, Linda Newsom.
This was an informal meeting of the BPA officers and Ms Kinion. Several topics were touched and openly discussed. There were Officer Reports. Items discussed were: band website, volunteering, logo, trophy case, incentives, Fall Festival, Middle School Night, fund raisers, and concerts.
The band website will become the main communication venue for Ms Kinion and parents. And Band Parents Assoc. meeting minutes will also be posted on the website.
Volunteering and membership were heavily stressed. With 89 beginning band students, Ms Kinion is asking for more volunteers in the classroom. Please contact her if you are able to help. Membership cards for 2011-2012 were designed. Membership will be $10/ family or individual. We are asking the students to design a logo for a t-shirt that will be available for adults to purchase.
Fund raising will include the t-shirt sales, the students selling possibly candy bars and discount cards. The Fall Festival is set for October 8, 2011. This fund raiser was very successful last year. We will need many volunteers. The Spaghetti Dinner is set for the spring.
August 23rd there will be a meeting for all of the returning band members. New band members will meet on August 25th.
There is a display case outside of the band room that will become a trophy case.

Minutes for 5/24/11
Ms Kinion led this meeting. Ms Kinion stated that she will need help on schedule pickup day. Someone to help with shirt sales, instrument rental, locker assignment, and lock sales. Also help is needed with signing up new band parents, trip planning, and advertising.
Fund raiser ideas were discussed including the Fall Festival, the Spaghetti Dinner, and candy sales. Music binders with sheet protectors for sale at schedule pick up. The idea of selling band t-shirts with a logo that the students design was offered. A garage sale fund raiser was suggested.
Ms Kinion plans to arrange a night for the parents to meet with instrument rental vendors. Suggestions for the band to participate in the home coming parade. Mr. Hurd gave the class money for music.
Ms Kinion has asked that anyone who helped at the festival or the dinner to make notes of what was done and how for the next years.
Officers will serve a one calendar year term, from Jan to Dec so that there is overlap. Next year’s meetings will be on Tuesdays once a month 7:30pm to 8:30pm perhaps with snacks.
Next meeting: August Thursday 11th. To work on an agenda for the first meeting of the new school year. We will meet at Panera by the Seminole Towne Center Mall at 7pm.

This is an amendment to the August 11th minutes.
Also discussed was the bank account that the BPA has opened. Signers on this account will be the Treasurer: Monique Dohtery; the Predsident: Linda Newsom; and the Vice-President: Charles DeStefano of the BPA. ( Ms Kinion has no access to this account, so please do not ask her. ) This account for Band Pasrents’ Assoc. purchases and to hold any money that comes in to the BPA. Including, but not limited to: membership dues, Fall Festival proceeds, and donations.
