Participants will engage in hands-on experiences through flight simulator missions, beginning with basic flight skills and advancing to intermediate challenges. The program also includes the opportunity to view aviation clips from historic films and documentaries. In the second half, participants will delve into aviation fundamentals, including aviation geography, weather, and basic aircraft structures and systems. Access to a state-of-the-art Flight Simulator will be provided for all participants to enhance their learning experience.
eSports
eSports is a dynamic program designed to introduce students to the rapidly growing world of competitive gaming and the diverse career opportunities within the eSports industry. Participants will explore various professions and internships related to eSports, from game design and development to event management and broadcasting. In addition to honing technical skills in coding with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, students will also learn about the rules, regulations, and policies that govern competitive eSports leagues and tournaments. The program will cover essential topics like cybersecurity, team management, and the business aspects of running eSports competitions, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the industry.
Gaming
Have you ever wondered what goes into game design and coding? The Gaming program introduces participants to the fundamentals of computer programming, with a focus on developing skills for general applications. Throughout the program, participants will learn a widely used programming language and become familiar with the basics of procedural, functional, and object-oriented programming, while creating their own text-based games. This program is open to all, with no prior experience required, though a basic understanding of computers and an interest in video games are helpful. It's the perfect entry point for anyone looking to explore the world of game development and coding.
Marine Biology
Marine Biology offers a comprehensive exploration of the physical and biological aspects of the oceans, providing participants with an in-depth understanding of marine science. It covers the physical and chemical properties of seawater, geological processes shaping ocean basins, sea floors, and shorelines, while introducing major groups of marine life. Participants will engage in hands-on activities such as field trips to SeaWorld and dissections of sea stars, stingrays, and pregnant sharks. A special focus is placed on marine mammals, sea turtles, conservation efforts, and husbandry techniques for marine life in aquarium settings. In the advanced section, participants will delve further into marine science careers, ecological relationships, the importance of coral reefs, and human impacts on the ocean, with additional dissections of squid, fish, and sharks.
Pre-Med
The Pre-Med program introduces participants to the field of medicine, helping them make informed decisions about future academic and career goals within the Health Science sector. The program provides a broad overview of health-related careers, covering essential terminology, job roles, history, necessary skills, and technologies associated with various medical pathways. Students will study the human body and its organ systems, with a focus on proper nutrition and exercise. The program also explores different career paths in healthcare, including job types, financial rewards, occupational hazards, and educational requirements, while incorporating practices for promoting good health.
Pre-Vet
The Pre-Vet program focuses on animal biology and provides participants with a deeper understanding of the animal kingdom. It covers the classification, anatomy, and adaptations of major animal groups, while introducing participants to the field of animal behavior, including both inherited and learned behaviors. The program also delves into the anatomy and physiology of domestic animals, examining common parasites and diseases. Veterinary medical terminology is emphasized through hands-on lab activities, including dissections of bone marrow, rats, sheep hearts, and sheep eyes. Participants will learn about common veterinary procedures through interactive activities and technology-based projects. As part of the program, Sanford Middle School will collaborate with the Central Florida Zoo to offer 8th graders a hands-on experience as part of the Pre-Vet Zoo Magnet elective.
Video Production
The Video Production program offers a progressive learning experience, starting with Video Production 1, which explores the impact of television from its invention in 1926 to the present, covering video formats, basic newsroom equipment, and lighting techniques. Students will learn to develop stories and conduct interviews, using storyboarding to organize projects. In Video Production 2, students build on these skills by working with audiovisual equipment to create and refine news segments, focusing on lighting effects and story development. They also conduct research and use storyboarding techniques for future news productions. Finally, Video Production 3 students are responsible for producing the school's morning news, the BRAVE Club, where they create stories, visual aids, and manage audiovisual equipment to ensure a professional broadcast.
Engineering
The Engineering Program introduces students to the engineering design process, allowing them to apply and stretch their skills through hands-on experiences using FabMaker Studio, a web-based digital fabrication tool. This software engages students in STEM and STEAM learning, encouraging creative problem-solving and real-world application. As part of the program, students can earn a FabMaker Studio digital certification, validating their expertise in digital fabrication. Additionally, the program is building an exciting partnership with Universal Studios, where students will explore the engineering behind roller coasters, gaining insight into the design, mechanics, and physics involved in creating thrilling, safe amusement park rides. This collaboration will provide a unique opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world engineering challenges.
Robotics
The Robotics Program provides students with entry-level knowledge and hands-on experience in designing, building, and programming robots. Through group activities and the use of technology, students learn to work with microcontrollers, servo motors, and various sensors to control a robot’s actions. As they advance, they are introduced to concepts such as digital logic, Boolean algebra, and basic electrical components, building on the foundation from Robotics I. The program emphasizes practical application through projects and collaborative learning. Additionally, Sanford Middle has a competitive Robotics team that participates in multiple competitions across Central Florida, offering students the opportunity to showcase their skills in real-world settings.
